Ceviche

ceviche

Ceviche is a refreshing and zesty dish that captures the essence of summer. Made from fresh seafood marinated in citrus juices, typically lime or lemon, it’s a celebration of flavors and textures. The acidity of the citrus “cooks” the seafood, while onions, cilantro, and chili peppers add layers of freshness and heat. Originating from the coastal regions of Latin America, ceviche is not only a healthy choice but also incredibly satisfying, offering a bright, tangy taste that pairs perfectly with tortilla chips or simply on its own as an appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 500 g fresh white fish cubed
  • 1/2 cup lime juice
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 1 red onion finely chopped
  • 1 tomato diced
  • 1 cucumber diced
  • 1 jalapeño minced
  • 2 tbsp cilantro chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Place the cubed fish in a large, non-reactive bowl (glass or ceramic). Pour the lime, lemon, and orange juices over the seafood, ensuring it is fully submerged.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until the fish and shrimp turn opaque and firm. The acid in the citrus juices will "cook" the seafood.
  • Once the seafood is "cooked," drain off most of the citrus juice, leaving a small amount in the bowl to keep the ceviche moist and flavorful.
  • Mix in onion, tomato, cucumber, jalapeño, and cilantro. Gently toss everything together to combine. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  • Cover the ceviche and refrigerate for another 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  • Serve the ceviche chilled with tortilla chips or tostadas on the side. Garnish with additional cilantro and lime wedges for extra zest.
